Jose E. Moreira

High-Performance Computing with the IBM POWER10 Processor

José E. Moreira is a Distinguished Research Staff Member in the Scalable Systems Department at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center. He received a B.S. degree in physics and B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1987, 1988 and 1990, respectively. He also received a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1995. Since joining IBM at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center, he has worked on a variety of high-performance computing projects. He was system software architect for the Blue Gene/L supercomputer and chief architect of the Commercial Scale Out project. He currently leads the IBM Research work on the architecture of Power processor. He is an author or coauthor of over 100 technical papers and 10 patents. Dr. Moreira is a member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and a Distinguished Scientist of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery).

HPC in Patient-Centric Fusion of Highly Dimensional Bio-Medical Data

Professor Natasa Przulj is an ICREA Research Professor and a Group Leader at Barcelona Supercomputing Center. She is a leader in network science and AI algorithms for biomedical data fusion applied to precision medicine. Her research has been cited over 10,400 times, h-index=46, i10-index=70 (Google Scholar) and supported by over €15 million in competitive funding. Notably, she received three prestigious, single PI, European Research Council (ERC) grants: Consolidator (2018-2024), Proof of Concept (2020-2022) and Starting (2012-2017).

She has been elected into: The Serbian Royal Academy of Scientists and Artists in 2019; Academia Europaea, The Academy of Europe, in 2017; Fellow of the British Computer Society (BCS) Academy of Computing, in 2013; Scientific Advisor (Naučni Savetnik) of the Mathematics Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Srpska Akademija Nauka i Umetnosti, SANU), in 2012. In 2014, she received a BCS Roger Needham Award, sponsored by Microsoft Research, in recognition of the potential her research has to revolutionize health and pharmaceutics. She obtained a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Toronto.

Computational Costs of Cloud Computing: Challenges and Solutions in High-Performance Computing

Drummond has been working in the field of parallel and distributed computing for many years. More recently, she has been investigating issues related to the modeling and design of task scheduling and resource dimensioning strategies in computational clouds. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics- Informatics from the State University of Rio de Janeiro in 1987, completed her Master's Degree in Systems and Computer Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1990, when she participated in the development team of the first parallel computer at UFRJ, Brazil. She completed a doctorate in Systems and Computer Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1994, and the main article of her thesis obtained a Prize for stimulating research granted by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Compaq Company, organized by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.

She is currently a Full Professor at Fluminense Federal University, Brazil, and her current research interest is in high-performance computing in clouds. Particularly, in this topic, in the last five years, she has supervised 3 Ph.D. Thesis, and has published more than 20 papers. She is a CNPq Level 1 Researcher, a Brazilian research agency, having more than 100 publications in conferences and journals. She is the coordinator of Stricto Sensu Pos-Graduate Programs at Fluminense Federal University and coordinator of the Special Commission on Computer Architecture and High-Performance Processing of the Brazilian Computer Society. She is currently also the coordinator of an International Project sponsored by CAPES, a Brazilian research agency, in collaboration with several foreign universities, including cooperation for joint supervision with double Ph. D. degree with Sorbonne University, in France. She was Program Chair of SBAC PAD 2016 and 2020 conferences.

Nayat Sánchez-Pi

Nayat Sánchez-Pi

Towards an Ecologically Viable Artificial Intelligence

She is a senior scientist at Inria and currently is the Director of the Inria Research Center in Chile. In 2018, she was also appointed CEO of the Inria Chile Foundation, and, since then, she leads the CIRIC Center of Excellence (Communication and Information Research and Innovation Center). Before joining Inria, Nayat was a professor of Artificial Intelligence and Human-Computer Interaction at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, founding and co-leading the Research Group on Artificial Intelligence and Optimization (RIO Group). She developed her scientific career in Spain, Brazil, France, and more recently in Chile.

She holds a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from the Carlos III University of Madrid, for which she received an Extraordinary Doctorate Award. Nayat's research interests range from artificial intelligence, machine learning, the internet of things, ambient intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Her scientific career is characterized by extensive international experience and a focus on applied research and innovation. She has several publications in high-impact conferences and journals and has been distinguished with several awards. She also has extensive experience leading interdisciplinary R&D teams with industrial and academic partners focused on solving real-world challenging problems generating high social, economic, ecological, and technological impact.
